Description:

Roman Empire, North Africa, 3rd to 4th century CE. Rare to find in any condition, let alone in this state of preservation. Transport amphora, used for storing and shipping wine, oil and water throughout the vast Roman empire. Created using a wheel, evident by the repeating bands along the exterior. Tapered form with pointed base, sloped shoulders and strap handles. The lovely red clay really sets this apart from the many typical buff vessels found throughout the Mediterranean. Size: 7.5" W x 24" H (19 cm x 61 cm); 24.375" H (61.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Dere collection, East Coast, USA assembled between 1970 and 2000
