Description:

Roman, North Africa, Tunisia, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A beautiful mold-made terracotta redware oil lamp with a circular base, smooth sides, planar shoulders, an unperforated conical handle, lengthy neck channel, and wide wick spout. Each semicircular shoulder is decorated with a repeating series of curvilinear and spiralized forms, each shape displaying a stippled interior, all in low-relief. The recessed tondo exhibits a finely-detailed footed amphora with arching handles, a globular body, a flared neck, and a multi-lobed plume projecting from the top, all with similarly-stippled adornments. Covered in a thick orange slip, this is a graceful example replete with expert artistry and meticulous attention to detail! Size: 5.5" L (14 cm).
