Description:

Roman, North Africa, Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. An exceptionally well preserved Roman pottery oil lamp with a circular foot, gradually expanding walls, a pair of fill holes within the recessed tondo, a pointed handle, and a broad wick spout in front of a narrow neck channel. This vivid orange vessel is adorned with repeated striped arrows along the perimeter of its face and the symbol of a Chi-Rho, one of the oldest Christograms consisting of the letters X and P, in the central tondo. Intricately embellished with crosses, squares, and a phytomorphic motif, this central icon was introduced by Emperor Constantine the Great, who, as legend has it, was instructed by God to use the symbol as his defense during battle and subsequently converted the Roman Empire to the Christian religion. A stunning piece of history from a defining moment in Western culture! Size: 5.5" L x 3.125" W x 2" H (14 cm x 7.9 cm x 5.1 cm)

Please note, the lucite stand in photos is not included.
