Description:

Roman, Northern Africa, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A large mold-made redware pottery oil lamp with a ringed base, rolled walls, an unperforated conical handle, a lengthy neck channel, and a wide wick spout. The planar shoulders display a gorgeous decorative register of triangles, checker-patterned squares, leaves, and multi-petaled flowers, all in low relief. The recessed tondo features a finely-detailed palm tree with broad, frilled leaves, a bifurcated trunk, a flared base, and a pair of fill holes resting underneath. Covered in red-orange slip, this is a wonderful lamp from ancient Northern Africa! Size: 5.375" L (13.7 cm).
