Description:

Eastern Roman Empire, Teos, 1st - 3rd century CE. Under the Roman Empire, Teos was a flourishing seaport known for its wine, the Temple of Dionysus, and its legendary theater. This pottery pendant, found at Teos, was modeled to represent an actor's mask. Once decorated with glaze, traces of white pigment still remain. The face of the mask is quite expressive, and the player's fanciful coiffure is adorned with a hair band of flowers. While the theater of Teos has been reduced to a historical ruin, this mask pendant is a reminder of the glorious acting tradition of Teos. 2.75"L (6.99 L cm) Provenance: Ex-Private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
