Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Delineating the mid-section of a female figure or goddess, a marble section presenting the abdomen, pubic triangle, slender hips, and buttocks of a female form. Although this is a fragment, the pose of the figure is suggested - the right leg is advancing as her weight is shifted to the left leg. The sculptor's ability to capture the goddess' weight shift and rhythmic sense of motion conjures a quality of human vitality in this sculpture. Such calculated poses were inspired by the ancient Greek works of Polykleitos and became the model to which sculptors aspired in Graeco-Roman as well as later Western European art. Size: 5" H (12.7 cm); 8.875" H (22.5 cm) on included custom stand.
