Rome, ca. 1st - 2nd century CE. An ancient marble torso of Silenus. the old satyr is portrayed standing, leaning on a tree. His neck and torso are completely preserved, invluding the long shaggy beard which is one of his prominent mythological characteristics. The muscular body is clad in a voluminous garment which covers the chest and wraps around the left arm from where it cascades down alongside the supporting tree trunk. 19-1/2"H. This figure is a variant of a popular sculptural type often used as decoration for Roman fountains: see B.
