Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A sensuous man's marble torso, possibly from a sarcophagus, depicted draped in a toga that hangs over one shoulder and wraps around the waist. The body is depicted as youthful and muscular, with his weight originally resting on his left leg and his left arm resting on his waist, suggesting an athlete or hero. The carving is fantastic, demonstrating the Roman ability to depict the human body naturalistically. The figure holds something against his side - perhaps a small pet dog? - but time has smoothed its features beyond recognition. Who did this figure represent - a real man, or a mythical figure? Size: 3.65" W x 7.55" H (9.3 cm x 19.2 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
