Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Carved marble statue of a youth facing forward, left hand resting upon a support, right at his side, nude and with great musculature, long wavy locks to his lower neck. Size: 8-3/4"H, not counting custom stand. This work appears to be a "provincial" example. In ancient Rome, the best, most talented artists worked in the heart of Rome and commanded high fees. In the Roman provinces, Gallis, Hispania, Britannia, Germania, etc, the artists were still talented, just not capable of producing the high art found in the cultural center - Rome. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

  • Provenance: Ex-Andrew Green Collection, Ex-David Kennedy Collection, acquired London Art Market in late 198os.
  • Notes: 1.0
  • Condition: Missing bottom part of legs, right arm and head, as shown.
