Description:

Rome, Julio-Claudian Period, ca. 1st century CE. A striking image of a Roman Patrician exhibiting all the gravitas and dignitas that come with his position in society. This piece demonstrates the rebirth of Classical Greek idealism that was brought on by the propagandist philosophy of Augustus and subsequent Imperators. In this time, Emperors and patricians wanted to be depicted as strong, wise, and intimidating. The plebeian classes should have no doubt in their minds who is ruling the Roman state.

This Roman is depicted with an ageless gaze, strong forehead and nose, defined cheek bones and chin, and subtly closed moth. His hair is composed of gently scalloped strands fully covering his head and shaped around his ears. Sculptures like this were often used in the gardens of Roman villas and served an important function in the ancestry cult in Rome. Life sized at 11"H x 8"W. Custom stand (14"H).
