Description:

Rome, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. Executed in coarse-grained marble, this sculpture features a broad, flat, expressive face with furrowed brow and deep nasolabial folds. Wide open eyes with broad lids and round, drilled pupils. The hair is combed forwards in two rows. 5-1/4"H (13.1 cm), not including custom stand.

Provenance: Previously collection of Friedlinger-Brandt, ca. 1950-1960; formerly Herbert A. Cahn, Basle, 1990's.

The unusual depth of the head, the coarsely worked surface and the clearly visible vertical groove running around the middle of the block of marble indicate that the head is unfinished. For the style, cf. a head fromHauran, Syria, The Walters Art Gallery, Early Christian and Byzantine Art, Cat. Baltimore (Baltimore 1947) no. 20 with illus.
