Description:

Rome, western portion of the Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A roughly square marble fragment from a tomb or monument bearing six lines of fragmentary Latin, including, in the fourth line, "MONTANA," the feminine singular of the adjective "montano," which means mountainous. The letters are well-formed and easy to read everywhere but the last few letters on the bottom right. Was this inscription carved to mark something that happened in the mountains, or a person from there? Romans wrote incredibly detailed inscriptions on funerary monuments, often recording where a person was from and his or her occupation, as well as other facts from his or her life story. Roman inscriptions had a life beyond just describing events and people past - they also allowed the transmittal of the Latin alphabet throughout the western portion of the Roman Empire, with their clear, precise forms of the letters and the staying power of their marble. Size: 6.7" W x 6" H (17 cm x 15.2 cm)
