Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A carved marble section of a female nude sculpture - possibly Venus (Aphrodite), the goddess of love and beauty - depicted from waist to thigh. The figure is shown leaning to one side, her curvy derriere and the locus of her genitalia clearly delineated. Although we cannot see the figure in its entirety, it is still possible to observe a weight shift onto her right leg and her left leg advanced at the hip, suggesting that the sculptor was depicting the subject in contrapposto and implying a rhythmic sense of motion. Such calculated poses intended to conjure human vitality in sculpture were inspired by the works of Polykleitos and became the model to which sculptors aspired in Graeco-Roman as well as later Western European art. Frosted lucite stand. Size: 2.125" W x 2.875" H (5.4 cm x 7.3 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
