Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fragment of a curved volute from an Ionic capital, an iconic classical architectural form that Vitruvius, an architect in the time of Augustus (ca. 63 BCE to 14 CE), compared to the form of a woman's body next to the, to his eye, "masculine" Doric columns. The spiral-shaped volutes at the top of Ionic columns are their signature form, here carved skillfully, with beautiful deposits on the cream-colored marble. Size: 5.1" W x 4.7" H (13 cm x 11.9 cm); 7.25" H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Massachusetts, USA collection, acquired 2018; ex-estate of a prominent scientist, USA, acquired 1960s to 1970s
