Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A skillfully carved head of a satyr, turned to the left and presenting naturalistic eyes with drilled pupils, full brows, a naturalistic nose, a mustache and full beard, his mouth open so as to reveal teeth, and characteristically pointed ears showing through the drilled curling hair. Satyrs originated in Greek mythology but were also favored by the Romans. Their goatlike features were associated with Bacchus (Greek Dionysos) and his fondness for wine and pleasures of the flesh. Size: 6.5" H (16.5 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
