Description:

Ancient Rome, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A near-miniature, carved marble head and torso belonging to an elderly deity, perhaps Jupiter (Zeus) or Hercules (Herakles). Despite the fact that this is a section, the remaining composition is still replete with intriguing content and detail. The sculptor carved a visage that is finely delineated with wrinkled skin and naturalistic features and meticulously rendered the waves and curls of his coiffure and beard. All is carved from a wonderful, white marble. Note how the figure's head dramatically turns toward his right, leaving the viewer to use his/her imagination to create a narrative. Quite marvelous. Custom mount Size: bust itself measures 1.75" W x 2.5" H (4.4 cm x 6.4 cm); 3.75" H on stand

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
