Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 2nd Century CE. Finely sculpted depiction of a bearded god, likely Jupiter (Zeus) in stone. The mature god has an oval face almost entirely obscured by the rich mass of his long, curly hair, beard, and moustache. Although his bushy eyebrows and aquiline nose show loss, his almond-shaped lidded but undrilled eyes, his slightly open mouth with full lower lip, and his modeled cheeks create a majestic, powerful appearance. His deeply drilled hair covers his ears and is encircled in back by a diadem.  Head itself measures 5-3/4"H. Provenance: Ex-private New York City, NY collection. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #100405
