Description:

Rome, ca. 2nd Century CE. A Roman marble head of a bearded god, likely Jupiter (Zeus). The mature god has an oval face almost entirely obscured by the rich mass of his long, curly hair, beard, and moustache. Although his bushy eyebrows and aquiline nose show loss, his almond-shaped lidded but undrilled eyes, his slightly open mouth with full lower lip, and his modelled cheeks create a majestic, powerful appearance. His deeply drilled hair covers his ears and is encircled in back by a diadem. Head itself measures 5-3/4"H. For a similar head identified as Asclepius, see Jacques Chamay & Jean0LOuise Maier, Art Romain: Sculptures en pierre du Museee de Geneve (Mainz, 1989), cat. no. 38, p. 33, pl. 54.1-3.

  • Provenance: Ex-private German Collection, 1990s.
  • Condition: Losses to top of head, eyebrows and nose, as shown, but still a fabulous, substantial example.
