Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. Skillfully carved from a single piece of marble, the head of a Satyr, presenting rather humanized features - large almond-shaped eyes with heavy lids, a naturalistic nose, slightly parted heart-shaped lips, prominent apple cheeks, and a pointed chin - crowned by a head of wavy hair with the suggestion of pointed ears. Satyrs originated in Greek mythology but were also favored by the Romans. Their goatlike features were associated with Bacchus (Greek Dionysos) and his fondness for wine and pleasures of the flesh. Size: 6.7" H (17 cm); 10.125" H (25.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Connecticut, USA collection; ex private Switzerland collection before 1985; NY Art Market 1985, old label; ex private North American collection 1985-2014; published Bonhams London, 5 July 2018 lot 83
