Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A skillfully carved white marble head depicting a goddess - perhaps Venus, the goddess of romantic love, who magically rose from the sea on a giant scallop - with her head ever so slightly tipped to the right and presenting a steadfast gaze, her coiffure parted just off center and swept back with long, wavy locks delineated and arranged in a high chignon supported and ornamented with a band on her right side. The goddess' beautiful oval face is sensitively modeled so as to attain a naturalistic visage with her rounded forehead, large, almond-shaped eyes with thick upper lids, thin brows that arch gracefully and merge with the bridge of her nose, rounded chin, and bow shaped, slightly parted lips. Custom stand. Size: 3" W x 5.5" H (7.6 cm x 14 cm); 6.875" H (17.5 cm) on stand
