Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th centuries BCE. A natural and well-carved marble head, with hair done in such a way to indicate that it is a male; lack of lines on the face and a slight chubbiness suggest that it is maybe a boy. The eyes are sensitive and have drilled pupils; it may once have had inlays or possibly painted eyes. The nose is wide in the bridge, as if the model had it badly broken. The mouth is small and slightly open. The head is carved so that the right (facing) side is part of an unshapen piece of marble, as if it was meant to be viewed from the side, part of a larger grouping. Size: 6" W x 5" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
