Description:

Rome, ca. 1st century CE. This is a sculpted marble fragment that was most likely part of a frieze; the fragment is of a forearm and hand grasping something. Marble statuary was everywhere in ancient Rome; even after all of the plundering that Rome underwent after the fall of the Roman Empire, we can still see a tremendous amount of marble statuary, including friezes, throughout the city. As a Roman citizen, you would have seen a world decorated with sculpted pieces like this one; they would have been brightly colored, gilded, or given inlays of shell or other stone. Size: 8.75"" L x 4.75"" W x 2.7"" H (22.2 cm x 12.1 cm x 6.9 cm).
