Description:

Roman, Imperal Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Attractive marble statue pf a standing goddess - probably Ceres (the Greek Demeter). She stands slightly contrapposto, wearing long flowing himation, veil over her head, probably once holding a cornucopia in her left hand and an unknown object in her right. Well detailed face, head covering, and gown - a lovely ancient example! Size: 5.25" W x 10.125" H (13.3 cm x 25.7 cm)

In ancient Roman religion, Ceres was a goddess of agriculture, grain crops, and fertility. The Romans saw her as the counterpart of the Greek goddess Demeter, whose mythology was reinterpreted for Ceres in Roman art and literature.
