Description:

Rome, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A Roman male youth head, finely carved from a seashell rich limestone, his visage delineated with delicate features including almond-shaped eyes with thick upper and lower lids, a slender nose, and full, slightly parted lips. Framing his face are thick tufts of wavy hair tucked behind the ears. Mounted upon custom stand. Size: 8" x 7" (20.3 x 17.8 cm); 11-1/2"H (29.2 cm) on stand.

Roman portrait sculptures were created as private and public pieces: as honorific statues of eminent officials, for funerary purposes, and as pieces to depict a family's ancestral line. While some examples display idealistic representations, much ancient Roman portraiture placed value upon realism and demonstrated the sculptor's and/or patron's desire to convey a humanistic presence with believable character.
