Description:

Rome, ca. 1st - 3rd century CE. In the foreground, the portrait of a Roman man, clean shaven, with typical Roman bangs. Strong forehead and aquiline nose, wide concerned eyes, narrow mouth, and rounded chin. A long neck gently tapers out to the top of the shoulders. Set inside a domestic lararium, with columns on both sides and vaulted roof in center. Diagonally incised lines on columns. Was once painted with white paint, with some of the original paint remaining. The overall workmanship of this piece suggests this did not belong to a wealthy-high ranking Roman, but to a more middle class citizen, wealthy enough to have such a portrait, but not enough to have the finest. Dedications like this are a rare glimpse into the faces of the less prestigious people of history. 13-1/2"H x 10-1/2"W x 3-3/4"L. br> Provenance: Ex-Private New Jersey Collection; Ex-Bradeen Collection, acquired at Harlan J.
