Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare example of a lead-filled, bronze-coated steelyard weight in the form of seated Cupid (Eros). Cupid holds a bunch of grapes in one hand and a small animal - possibly a dog, representing fidelity - under the other arm. He is in his most childlike form, depicted nude, with chubby limbs, a smooth face, and long hair. He also has smooth wings. A linked bronze chain is attached to his back. This weight was used as part of a steelyard (statera) balance that consisted of a of a rectangular beam with hanging chains attached to them from which decorative weights like this one hung. Size: 1.75" W x 2.55" H (4.4 cm x 6.5 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.
