Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A leaded bronze statuette of Venus - Greek Aphrodite - the Roman goddess of love and beauty depicted standing nude in contrapposto with one hand on her breast and the other over her sex - a pose known as the Venus Pudica, a stance that simultaneously shields and highlights her bareness. Crowned by a pointed tiara, the deity turns her head slightly left, her hair pulled back in a partial bun at the nape of her neck with some wandering tendrils cascading down her sloped shoulders. Her hourglass figure further emphasizes her godly dominion over desire, sex, and fertility. Size: 1.1" W x 3.9" H (2.8 cm x 9.9 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Danvers, Massachusetts, USA collection, acquired by descent; ex-USA collection, acquired before 2000
