Description:

First time at auction…

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Oaxaca, Mixtec people, ca. 900 to 1200 CE; Near East, Late Roman / Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 8th century CE. A pair of ancient copper and leaded-bronze weapons from the new and old world - a Mixtec celt axe blade and a late Roman mace head with a spiked exterior. The celt is heavy with a thick body that tapers to a blunt butt end, the blade could be attached to a wood handle for use or may have been ritualistic. The mace head was set on a shaft for wielding during combat and the hefty weight alone makes this piece deadly with the spikes ensuring the most damage possible. Size of celt blade: 5" L x 1.3" W (12.7 cm x 3.3 cm)
