Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A leaded-bronze foot attachment for a casket, cauldron, or small piece of furniture, in the form of a magnificent lion. A band across the top features two openings for attaching the foot to the side of the vessel or casket. Below are coiling shapes that flank the lion's head, perhaps wings - possibly turning this lion into a mythical being. The feline head is in relief, and rests on oversized clawed foot that forms the base. Decorative items like this one give us an idea of how simple or everyday items in the Roman world would have looked - ornate and whimsical! Size: 1.75" L x 2.5" W (4.4 cm x 6.4 cm); 3.125" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.
