Description:

Roman, 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. Solid lead football-shaped projectile used with deadly accuracy by the Roman legions as they conquered most of Europe, the British Isles and parts of Asia and Africa. Interestingly, as was the case with this fascinating piece of ancient history, the Romans would often inscribe insults, curse words or their legion affiliations on their bullets in an effort to demoralize the enemy. In this case, the inscription is in Greek with an Alpha, Gamma and M on one side and Lamba on the other. 1" long. All items in this auction are legal to buy/sell under U.S. statute covering cultural patrimony per United States Code 2600, CHAPTER 14 -- CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Provenance: Ex-Harlan J. Berk, Chicago, IL.
