Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A striking mold-made ceramic pilgrim's flask with a low relief head of Janus set into a round border and ringed by floral motifs on either side. Small handles rise from the upper shoulder to a narrow, flared mouth. This style of vessel is ancient, inspired by the Near East and brought to the Mediterranean in the Archaic period; it was probably used to hold sacred oil or some other blessed liquid. Janus is the god of doorways and transitions, and thus beginnings and endings, often symbolizing a moment of change in life or an in-between state. Size: 1" L x 3.75" W x 4.5" H (2.5 cm x 9.5 cm x 11.4 cm)
