Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, Nero, ca. 54 to 68 CE. Gold aureus. Laureate head right, NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS. Reverse: the temple of Vesta. RIC.61 (R). Rare! Size: 0.7" W (1.8 cm)

Roman coins sometimes show the Empire's architectural treasures, and this example, featuring the Temple of Vesta, is a very nice example. That temple, located near the Roman Forum with reconstructed remains that can be viewed today, was a circular-walled public place to worship Vesta, the goddess of hearth, home, and family. The temple was built sometime prior to the 4th century BCE, and rebuilt multiple times - after being destroyed multiple times. One such reconstruction was during Nero's reign, commemorated here.
