Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A redware mortarium with a flanged rim and a conical shape. It tapers to a flat base. The interior has incised pattern of radiating lines in tondo. Roman workshops mass produced bowls of this style for use in Roman cooking and food serving, and it may have been buried with its owner. Mortaria were heavy bowls, often with thick flanges (like this one), with sand/grit embedded in their internal surfaces. These were used for pounding and mixing foods. Size: 7.3" W x 2.05" H (18.5 cm x 5.2 cm)
