Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. An elegant wheel-thrown red-slip flagon with a thick base, a wide flaring body with a rolled shoulder, a tall tubular neck with a flared rim, and a pair of arching strap handles with incised linear designs. The bottom of the body displays a repeating series of faded diagonal abrasions, giving it a personalized presentation. Primarily used to contain wine or other consumable liquids, flagons were invented to provide hydrations to field laborers or rowers aboard ships. Size: 6.5" W x 7.5" H (16.5 cm x 19 cm).

  • Condition: Repair to one handle with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age as expected, small nicks to base, body, handles, and spout, with some fading and abrasions to slip pigmentation, and fading to body decorations. Light earthen deposits and nice root marks throughout. Old area of putty on base.
