Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, a leaded bronze left arm holding a bird, perhaps an eagle or a dove, in the hand. Note the wonderful textured detailing of the bird's feathered plumes as well as the fine rendering of the fingers' cupped gesture and delineated nailbeds. In classical antiquity, the eagle was an attribute of Jupiter (Zeus) as well as a highly-symbolic animal of pride and victory. Known as "aquila" in Latin, the eagle was a representation of honor, victory, and cohesiveness. Doves were associated with Venus (Aphrodite), the goddess of love. Size: 3.2" L x 1.25" W x 1.9" H (8.1 cm x 3.2 cm x 4.8 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
