Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dazzling flask boasting an elegant piriform body made from aubergine-hued glass with translucent swirls creating a slight marbled effect. This type of ancient glass - known as "marbled," "color-band," or "mosaic" glass - is created through a process of casting and blowing which allows the artist to weave strands of different-colored glass throughout the composition. The rich violet color only amplifies its opulence, as this coveted shade was derived from shellfish of Tyre - one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Stylish vessels like this example would have been found in a noblewoman's toilette and used by the ancients to contain sweet and floral scented oils or other precious liquids. Look closely and one may find feint silver and rainbow iridescence covering the exterior - a gorgeous souvenir from millennia of existence! Size: 2.4" Diameter x 4.3" H (6.1 cm x 10.9 cm)
