Description:

Roman, Eastern Empire, Holy Land, ca. late 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. A sizable terracotta jar of the popular Herodian type with a round but stable base, a carinated midsection, a sloped shoulder bearing a pair of arching loop handles, and a squat, narrow neck with a flared rim. The exterior of the vessel exhibits dozens of shallow grooves formed during the formative wheel-throwing process that create a textured surface that provides ample grip for when the handles are otherwise utilized. Vessels like this example were used to cook various types of foodstuffs and liquids based on the narrow rim. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 8.7" W x 8.125" H (22.1 cm x 20.6 cm)
