Description:

Roman, Holy Land, ca. 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE. An intriguing bone figure, hand-carved from an ungulate bone, into an anthropomorphic votive of a male, probably a god. The figure has a long beard, incised eyes and mouth, and a blocky body with incised lines that give an idea of clothing. Figures like this one would have been kept on an altar in a home or given as offerings at temples. Size: 0.8" W x 2.55" H (2 cm x 6.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities; ex-Edgar L. Owen, auction Thursday, June 11, 1998, lot # 186
