Description:

Roman, late Imperial Period, probably Tomi (Romania), ca. early 6th century CE. A mottled grey marble plaque with a three line incised inscription in Latin. This was likely a memorial tablet, and the remains of iron attachments on the back show how it was attached. The inscription reads, "ex antiquis ren[o]vatum est per paternum rev-" and is likely the same as another known inscription that reads, "ex antiquis renovatum est per Paternum reverentissimum episcopum nostrum amen" or "It has been renewed from the ancients by our most respected bishop, Paternus. Amen" with the "it" referring to whatever the plaque was attached to. The similar inscription referred to Paternus, the bishop of Tomi in the early 6th century. Size: 4.1" W x 2.45" H (10.4 cm x 6.2 cm)

#139545

  • Condition: Small chips from edges, but otherwise in excellent condition, with a very readable inscription and fine root marks and deposits on the surface. Iron patina on the back of the piece attests to how it was once attached to a surface.
