Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. In excellent condition, this is a beautiful shallow glass bowl with a flanged rim, steep sides, and a shimmering, purple irisdescence in some places. There may be the remains of a pontil mark on the slightly concave base. A bowl like this one could have been used for holding salt or other condiments at the table. After the invention of glass blowing in the middle of the 1st century BCE in the Roman province of Syria, the glass industry was forever transformed. An industry sprang up throughout the Roman world for mass producing glass jars, tableware, and larger storage containers, replacing pottery goods. Despite the scale of the production, small jars like this one show significant variations in the shape and color of the glass, which makes each piece almost unique. Size: 2.8" W x 1.25" H (7.1 cm x 3.2 cm)
