Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful singular earring comprised of 96% gold (equivalent to 22K+) with a square body, the front of which raises in a pyramidal style to a central recessed cavity which perhaps held a precious stone at one time. A sinuous hook projects from the verso and terminates in a tightly-coiled loop. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Size: 0.35" W x 0.75" H (0.9 cm x 1.9 cm); quality of gold: 96% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 1.4 grams.
