Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An ancient Roman high karat gold finger ring set with an oval carnelian intaglio of brilliant vermillion hues that is inscribed "M C T / M I ` D E S" and set in a raised bezel. The sizeable shank is substantive in its own right - carefully hammered to present three linear profiles and further adorned with granules at its juncture with the bezel. This ring was most likely created for a woman, given its size. An exquisite example, replete with the utmost artistry and technique. US ring size: 6. Total weight: 8.36 gm.
