Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous ring fashioned from 95% gold (equivalent to 22K+) bearing a thin shank and a nearly circular bezel surrounded by delicate gold filigree. Within the bezel is a hand-carved carnelian intaglio of warm vermilion hues displaying the left-facing portrait of a goddess, perhaps Ceres (Greek Demeter), wearing a braided fillet atop her expertly arranged coiffure that cascades in straight locks down atop her shoulder. An exquisite example of opulent Roman jewelry!   • Condition: Wearable as shown. Top of bezel has one petite chip along upper ridge and one stable hairline fissure on opposite side, with very slight bending to overall form of shank, and minor abrasions to intaglio, otherwise intact and excellent. Smooth patina to ring and intaglio and nice preservation to intaglio details.
