Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A thick sheet of 89% gold sheet (equivalent to 21K+) folded into a signet ring shank with a white chalcedony intaglio stone. The intaglio is set within the wide band and engraved with a grazing horse. This is a large signet ring that perhaps belonged to an elite Roman. Chalcedony was a popular stone for seals because hot wax did not stick to it, making clear impressions. Size of shank: 1" W (2.5 cm); US ring size 9; quality of gold: 89% (equivalent to 21K+); total weight: 4.7 grams
