Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dazzling gold earring adorned with repousse and applied decoration steeped in Roman iconography with a central tondo of a female bust facing right - likely intended as Venus the Roman goddess of beauty - flanked by bunches of grapes and acanthus leaves with 4 danglers hanging from suspension loops at the bottom. One dangler appears to hold a petite glass inlay. Size with danglers: 1.3" W x 1.5" H (3.3 cm x 3.8 cm); without danglers: 1.3" W x 1.2" H (3.3 cm x 3 cm); gold quality: 77.34% (equivalent to over 18 karats); weight: 2.8 grams
