Roman, late Imperial to early Byzantine period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A gorgeous lunate pendant with a crescent-shaped body formed from delicate 94.9% gold - equivalent to over 22 karats - panels bearing 9 rough-cut garnets of warm vermillion hues strung on a modern, gold-plated strand to be wearable. The shape of the crescent moon was associated with Luna, the divine embodiment of the moon usually depicted in Roman art paired with the Sun and driving a four-horse quadriga. Lunar motifs are also linked with the Roman goddesses Diana and Juno. Size of pendant: 0.7" L x 0.7" W (1.8 cm x 1.8 cm); of largest garnet: 0.1" L (0.3 cm); of strand: 18.5" L (47 cm); quality of gold: 94.9% (equivalent to over 22 karats); weight of pendant: 1.3 grams

  • Condition: Ancient pendant on modern, gold-plated chain. Missing smallest garnet inlay on left tip of crescent, but all others are intact. Some light bending to gold. Otherwise, excellent and wearable.
