Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fascinating repousse almost pure silver (99%) panel depicting a standing figure - a soldier, facing forward, wearing a large helmet, a tunic, and a short skirt, with a crescent-shaped motif on his chest. Thickly muscled arms and a smooth face give an impression of vitality and athleticism. Above the figure's head is a band of gold (88% pure, equivalent to 21K). Thin panels made of precious metals like this one were applied to wooden boxes and similar items to serve as decoration. Size: 1.55" W x 3.55" H (3.9 cm x 9 cm); 4.15" H (10.5 cm) on included custom stand; silver is 99% pure, gold is 88% pure, equivalent to 21K; total weight: 21.9 grams.
