Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely group of 2 free-blown vessels - a bottle and an unguentarium - that are each made from translucent glass in blue-green and yellow-green hues. First is a rectangular bottle with a slightly concave base, smooth walls beneath a plateaued shoulder, a thick rim, and a wide trail handle arching along the verso. The unguentarium has a ring foot with a smooth pontil scar underneath, a piriform body that flares out from the neck to form the rim, and a pair of trail handles on the sides. Attractive layers of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence have formed across both containers. Size (unguentarium): 1.8" L x 4.125" W x 3.8" H (4.6 cm x 10.5 cm x 9.7 cm); (bottle): 1.875" L x 1.75" W x 3.8" H (4.8 cm x 4.4 cm x 9.7 cm)

  • Condition: Both vessels have light abrasions and encrustations commensurate with age, with light weathering film, and micro-bubbling within the glass matrices, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base of unguentarium. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Great iridescence throughout.
