Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous drinking cup that is free-blown from translucent, blue-green glass. The tall vessel features a concave base, a rectangular body with a large, vertical flute along each wall, and a thin, flared rim with a gently ground rim for ease of use. The encrustations along most of 1 wall and portions of the neighboring 2 walls show how this vessel was situated throughout centuries with water or soil resting on and in it, and these areas have commensurately developed most of the attractive rainbow-hued iridescence seen on its surfaces. Size: 2.875" W x 4.125" H (7.3 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, before 2000
