Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A translucent glass intaglio of purple hues and marvelous translucency - depicting a nude, male athlete standing with the left leg bent at the knee and toes placed behind the right foot, his right hand on his hip, and his left arm resting upon a column as the forearm extends forward with a palm branch symbolizing Victory in his hand. His head is delineated in profile and presents delicate features, long locks adorned by an ivy wreath. The athlete's anatomy is captured quite adeptly with balanced proportions, fine musculature, and implied motion. Such calculated poses intended to conjure human vitality and in sculpture were inspired by the works of Polykleitos which became the model to which artists aspired in Graeco-Roman as well as later Western European art. The piece also comes with a lovely grey clay impression. Size: 1" W x 1.125" H (2.5 cm x 2.9 cm)
